Turn to the Tunturi R60 rowing machine, which offers many of the features of a commercial rower in the comfort of your basement, den, or garage. The R60 offers a long, smooth rowing motion that efficiently trains nearly all the major muscle groups, along with a monochrome LCD display that lets you track your time, distance, and calories burned. The rower's 12 total training programs, meanwhile--which include eight preset programs and constant and recovery heart-rate modes (belt is included)--make it easy to design a comprehensive workout regimen. Perhaps the handiest feature, however, is the foldable frame and bottom wheels, which make it a breeze to transport and store the rower after your workout is complete.

Other features include a heavy-duty frame that's stable and durable; a comfortable saddle and footrest; remote controls in the pull bar for quick resistance changes; a weight capacity of 300 pounds; and a stylish Tunturi color. The R60 rowing machine measures 20 by 63 by 14 inches (W x H x D) when folded, weighs 100 pounds, and carries the following warranties: 20 years on the frame and motor and 18 months on components.

I really wanted to like the Tunturi R60 because the Concept2 rower is such a cliche. On paper, the R60 seemed to offer a lot: dual track seat, compact folding design, quiet electromagnetic resistance, and a bit of Scandinavian panache. In reality, the plastic membranes covering the R60's control buttons on the handle and the computer housing cracked from repeated use, its slippery seat did not conform to my posterior, its non-adjustable foot rests were uncomfortable and caused my gym shoes to squeak relentlessly, and its nylon belt connecting the handle to the flywheel made annoying noises as it abraded against the flywheel housing. To my chagrin, I wound up owning a Concept2 Model D...which costs far less than the R60 and, in my estimation, works far better. Buyer beware.
