Sony has really hit a home run on these headphones. If you are looking for a set of solid sounding headphones, but don't want to shell out the high cost of the wide variety of high performance headphones out there, these should really be on your short list. A newly-redesigned format sits comfortably and securely in the ear, and the set is supplied, not only with a series of different sized buds, but also, a series of different sized noise isolating buds (you get seven sets of buds, total). The set also comes with a nice black case with a plastic insert that allows you to mount the headphones while they are being stored, and the ubiquitous Sony designed cord wrapper (if you care to use that).

It must be commented here that the shape of the earpieces themselves, strange as they may first appear, really do indeed perform some "magic"in keeping the pieces seated, and seated correctly, in the ear. I suspect that it won't be too long in time before this shape starts showing up in all kinds of headphones, because it is truly an advancement in the design of these components.

I think that what is really at play here is that Sony has moved the technology forward again, if, perhaps, incrementally, but then not overcharged you for the change (as has often been the case with Sony equipment). There is a more expensive format of the same style (Sony MDREX510LP In-Ear Headphones) which may offer you some incremental improvement, but to be perfectly honest, I'm not sure that I can believe that the double the price you pay for those could possibly result in sound quality twice as good. These 310's sound great, are comfortable, and don't hurt the wallet too much.

Remember that, with any bud-style headphone, that proper fit in the ear canal is essential if you are to experience the full range of sound produced. If the ear bud is not properly placed in the canal, bass levels precipitously drop, and it may sound like the headphones are producing very inferior sound. On these, when properly inserted, the sound is amazingly rich, full in bass, and with a wide, easy range that goes all the way to the top. Make sure you look at the different sized supplied earbud pieces to use a size that is right for your ear canal. You may have to take a few tries to find out which one fits best. You can also experiment, too, with the noise-reducing sets that are also supplied with this product. Cool.

There may be a burn-in period for these (some question wether such a construct applies to bud style headphones), but mine sounded lovely right out of the box, and I'm listening to them as I write this review. Sound is rich, full, sonorous, with great separation and stage. They are extremely comfortable, and they do not feel like they are about to fall out of my ears every moment. So, I'm happy with Sony, not only for this technology improvement, but also the fact that they've kept the price reasonable. Try them out and see if you agree. Five stars.
